The project aims to reduce the phenomena of marginalization and social degradation, as well as to improve the urban decorum and the social and environmental fabric of the old core by resurfacing the pavement. The paving of Grottaglie’s historic center is partly paved and partly with a layer of asphalt to cover pre-existing paving stones, some of which are compromised or missing due to infrastructure and underground utility works carried out over the past years. The basalt paving can be distinguished chronologically into three types, the ancient one, the more recent one dating back to the end of the last century, and the one under construction with the 2019 project. The project involves the rehabilitation of the basalt paving, through the recovery of existing paving stones where they are present under the bituminous surface and the laying of new paving stones in areas where they are missing. Areas of the street network in proximity to buildings of worship or architectural importance have been selected, in order also to enhance them and their surrounding areas, such as the church of Madonna del Lume, the church of San Francesco De Geronimo, the church of Santa Lucia, the small church of Santi Pietro e Paolo and Palazzo De Felice, or by selecting important streets of the historic center that close the existing street network. Having performed the plano-altimetric survey of the intervention areas, essays were punctually carried out in order to detect the presence of the ancient paving stones under the asphalt surface and the related equipment of the pre-existing paving network.
