GROTTAGLIE: REDEVELOPMENT OF THE ANCIENT CORE

Typology:
Urban regeneration

Location:
Grottaglie-Italy

Year:
2023 - in progress

The objective of the project is to reduce the phenomena of marginalisation and social decay, as well as to improve urban decorum and the social and environmental fabric of the old town centre by resurfacing the pavement. The paving of Grottaglie's historic centre is partly paved and partly with a layer of bituminous conglomerate covering pre-existing paving stones, some of which are compromised or missing due to infrastructure and underground utility works carried out in past years. The basalt paving can be distinguished chronologically into three types, the ancient one, the more recent one dating back to the end of the last century, and the one under construction with the 2019 project. The project envisages the rehabilitation of the cobbled paving by recovering the existing paving stones, where present under the bituminous surface, and laying new paving stones in areas where they are missing. Areas of the road fabric were selected in the vicinity of religious or architecturally important buildings, in order also to enhance them and their surrounding areas, such as the church of the Madonna del Lume, the church of San Francesco De Geronimo, the church of Santa Lucia, the church of Saints Peter and Paul and Palazzo De Felice, or by selecting important streets in the historic centre that close off the existing road fabric. Once the plano-altimetric survey of the intervention areas had been carried out, we proceeded punctually with the execution of essays aimed at detecting the presence of the ancient paving stones under the asphalt mantle and the relative equipment of the pre-existing paving fabric.
